Find a Provider

It is easy to find a provider on the Disability Directory.

First, determine what type of provider you are looking for.  We have grouped them into categories to make it easier.

Aids and Equipment

This category includes organisations who make, hire, rent, fund, or otherwise deal with aids and equipment for people with a disability.

Disability Specific

This category includes organisations that provide information or support for a specific diagnosis or condition.

What is the difference between diagnosis and condition?

Under the category of “Diagnosis”, we have included the disorder or disease that a person is diagnosed with.  Some organisations provide support to individuals who have been diagnosed with a specific disorder, and people with the same, or similar disorders, may find this information useful.  Some examples include Autism Spectrum Disorders, Spina Bifida and Cerebral Palsy.

You may also like to check the Diagnosis articles section, which may contain further details of organisations.  Where organisations do not provide services directly to the public, they may only be listed in the articles section, whereas those that provide services may be listed in both articles and the directory.

Under the catgeory of “Condition”, we have included the actual symptoms experienced, irrespective of the cause.  For example, there may be many causes for blindness or other visual impairment, or mobility problems, and organisations listed here provide services or products that are useful for people experiencing these conditions.

Education and Work

This section includes details of organisations that assist people with disabilities to further their education or seek employment.

Housing and Accommodation

This section includes details of organisations that assist people with disabilities to secure appropriate housing and accommodation.

Programs and Financial

This section includes details of organisations that run programs of interest to people with a disability, but may not deliver specific services.  Examples of this may include a community education program.  The financial section includes details of organisations that may be able to assist with various forms of financial assistance, grants, funding or scholarships.

Sport and Recreation

This sections includes details of organisations that assist people with a disability to participate in sports and recreation activities.

Supports and Information

This section includes to sub-sections:

Individual supports and Family Supports.

Individual supports are those provided to the person with a disability directly.  Family supports are those provided to families of people with a disability.  The categories include counselling, independent living skills, personal care and more.

Therapies

This category includes organisations that provide therapies for people with a disability, including speech therapy, art therapy, physiotherapy and more.

Searching Tips

When searching any of these categories, it is important to remember that the more information you search on, the more you narrow the search.  So, if you search for Aids and Equipment, and you are looking for wheelchairs, selecting the region ACT will narrow the search to organisations that provide wheelchairs in the ACT.  This may be what you are looking for.

On the other hand, you may be interested in organisations that make wheelchairs anywhere, but you live in the ACT.  In this case, do not select a region, so that you can see all providers that relate to wheelchairs.

Further, you may search for wheelchair, ACT and select the age category of “child”.  This may turn up no searches, because the organisation is not specific to children.  If the organisation provides wheelchairs for all ages, you may not find it by narowing the search down to children.  On the other hand, if you are looking for a therapist who specialises in therapies for children, it may be appropriate to narrow your search down this way.

We are working to add service providers to our site, but it takes time. If you can’t find the service you are looking for, there is another option. Infoxchange Service Seeker also provides a listing of service providers: http://www.serviceseeker.com.au/ The more information the better….
